To set up and use the VPN on your Apple TV, download the Windscribe VPN app directly from the tvOS App Store, log in with your credentials, and click the connect button on the home screen. The application sets up the connection, encrypting your data and routing it through a remote network location.
Make sure you have the following ready before beginning the setup process:
Operating System Requirement: Your Apple TV must run tvOS 17.5 or later. Windscribe's current Apple TV app requires tvOS 17.5+.
Account Requirements: A registered account is necessary. Free accounts start with a 2 gigabyte monthly data allowance, which automatically upgrades to 10 gigabytes per month once you confirm your email address. To remove data limits and unlock every server location, you can upgrade to Pro for $9/month or $69/year ($5.75/month). Alternatively, our Build-A-Plan option lets you pay $1 per location per month with a $3 monthly minimum. Unlimited data and full R.O.B.E.R.T. access are available as a $1/month add-on.
Windscribe publishes the source code for its client apps, including the official Windscribe iOS and tvOS repo. While advanced developers can build the application from source using Xcode, standard users should install it directly through Apple's ecosystem.
A quick note on locations: free accounts can only connect to the free server locations. Paid (starred) locations require either a Build-A-Plan add-on for that location or a Pro subscription.
A few options in the configuration menu are worth reviewing to customize how your device handles network traffic.
What it is: A server-side domain and internet address blocking tool.
What it does: It filters and drops network requests at the DNS layer before they ever reach your Apple TV.
Why you need it: It acts as a customizable filter that can block selected ad, tracker, malware, and custom domains before they reach the device. Because R.O.B.E.R.T. works at the DNS layer of the Windscribe tunnel, it only filters while you are connected to the VPN; when you disconnect, your device resolves DNS normally and no filtering is applied.
How much you can block depends on your plan:

What it is: A native operating system-level connection trigger.
What it does: It monitors your network state and manages connection transitions behind the scenes.
Why you need it: It can automatically reconnect based on your network configuration when On-Demand mode is enabled, reducing the need to manually toggle the interface every time you turn on your television hardware.
What it is: The communication protocol utilized to format and secure data packets.
What it does: It controls how your connection is established, encrypted, and carried across the network.
Why you need it: The app supports multiple industry frameworks including WireGuard, AmneziaWG, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Stealth, and WStunnel. If you are on a restrictive network, such as hotel, campus, or shared Wi-Fi, Stealth or WStunnel can help when standard virtual private network traffic is blocked.
A VPN protects your data in transit and changes your visible internet address, but it is not a magical shield. If you log directly into a streaming account or subscription profile that contains your real name, payment cards, or home billing address, that platform still tracks your identity inside their database. A secure tunnel prevents your internet service provider or network operator from monitoring your web traffic, but online privacy still depends heavily on your personal login habits.
